Designing Watertight, level-threshold Wetrooms

Written by Ola Frimpong MCIAT MSc BSc (Hons), Director

Level-threshold wetrooms offer a sleek, barrier-free shower experience. Unlike traditional shower enclosures with raised thresholds, level-threshold wetrooms are designed with a smooth transition between the shower area and the rest of the room, creating a more accessible, open, and stylish space. However, achieving a watertight level-threshold wetroom requires careful detailing to ensure no water leaks into other parts of the room or building. Here's how we have designed functional and watertight level-threshold wetrooms for one of our Residential Developer Clients in 3 of their large developments in Central London, consisting of hundreds of high-end apartments.

1. Proper Slope for Drainage

Even though the floor is level, the shower area still needs a slight slope toward the drain to allow water to flow efficiently. This is crucial in preventing standing water and potential water damage. We prefer to work to 2% slope, which is subtle but effective, and saves on space. We ensure the slope is in the floor screed / substrate and not relying on the tile adhesive. Relying on the tile adhesive to form the slope poses a risk of not adhering to the manufacturer’s recommended maximum thickness, which leads to failure.  Specially designed wetroom floor substrate can help create the ideal incline without compromising the sleek look of a level-threshold design.

2. High-Quality, Well-Known and Reputable Waterproof Membranes

The key to a watertight wetroom lies in the application of high-quality waterproofing membranes. These membranes are applied to the floors, walls, and even beneath tiles to form a protective barrier against water infiltration. When choosing a waterproofing system, look for products that are designed for wetroom applications, ensuring complete coverage and long-lasting protection from leaks.

3. Seamless Waterproofing at the Edges

For a level-threshold wetroom, it's vital that the edges where the floor meets the walls are completely sealed. This is especially important in wet areas where water can easily seep through gaps. Using flexible, waterproof sealants like silicone around joints and edges helps ensure that moisture remains contained within the shower area. A neat, seamless finish also improves the aesthetic of the room.

4. Slip-Resistant Flooring

While the main concern for a watertight wetroom is water containment, it’s also essential to consider safety. Non-slip, water-resistant flooring materials such as porcelain, ceramic tiles, or specially designed wetroom vinyl are the best flooring options. A ‘R’ value of R11 or higher is recommended for optimum slip-resistance in wetrooms. These materials provide traction and help prevent accidents, ensuring a safe and functional space while maintaining a sleek, modern appearance.

5. Effective Drainage Systems

A level-threshold wetroom must have a well-planned drainage system that prevents water from spreading beyond the designated shower area. A discreet, linear drain placed at the lowest point of the shower area helps to channel water away efficiently. The drain should be large enough to handle water flow and positioned correctly to avoid any water pooling in the room.

Conclusion

Designing a watertight level-threshold wetroom requires careful consideration of both form and function. By focusing on proper drainage, high-quality waterproofing, attention to detail during installation and attention to safety features, one can create a stylish, accessible, and long-lasting wetroom. With the right materials, detailing and site inspections, a level-threshold wetroom can be a beautiful, seamless addition to any property that remains dry and durable for years to come.
